- Caring for a Loved One Can be Hazardous to Your Health
Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that may be accompanied by a change in attitude — from positive and caring to negative and unconcerned. Burnout can occur when caregivers don’t get the help they need, or if they try to do more than they are able — either physically or financially. Additionally, research is showing that those who care for another over a long period or with a complicated medical illness may be victims of “secondary traumatization”, as they witness difficult procedures ( images associated with wounds, surgeries, amputations, etc.), suffering, or mental decline, such as in Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Let Mark walk your staff through some of the important prevention steps in this rising problem.
